Benefits & Compliance Manager

Compensation

$130,000-$150,000

The Opportunity

A employee benefits company, recently acquired by a private equity firm, is building its HR function from scratch and needs someone to own benefits and compliance from day one.

  • This is a build, not a maintenance role
  • The previous benefits admin was a junior hire who kept things running at roughly 50 employees, then exited before the current VP of HR arrived, so this person inherits a gap, not a handover
  • Uses proprietary medical reimbursement systems and risk transfer solutions to lower employer healthcare costs, averaging 18 percent savings for clients
  • 140 employees across 32 states
  • 30 percent year over year growth for two straight years
  • Fully remote since inception, small Greenwich office used mainly by the CEO

What You'll Own

  • Medical, dental, and vision plan management
    • Full end to end ownership of the fully insured benefits plan
  • 401(k) administration
    • Plan runs through ADP
    • Real ownership expected: non-discrimination testing and retirement fund administration done properly, not just paperwork processed
    • No one has properly owned this plan in some time
  • Multi-state compliance
    • Policy tracking, handbook currency, and filings across 35+ states
    • Particular regulatory focus expected on California, New York, New Mexico, and Colorado
  • Leaves administration
    • FMLA, short and long term disability
    • Close coordination with payroll

What Good Looks Like

  • Has genuinely run a fully insured benefits plan end to end, not just administered one someone else designed
  • Treats the 401(k) as their own, taking ownership of compliance testing and fund administration rather than just completing tasks
  • Comfortable being the first to properly get a handle on a program that's been under-managed for some time
  • Strong broker relationship skills, able to work directly with Aetna and Marsh McLennan and push on cost and plan design rather than accept what's presented
  • Can translate benefits options into something employees actually understand, relevant given the employee population is mostly female, aged 30 to 40

Reporting and Team Context

  • Reports to the VP of HR
  • VP of HR sits on a five person leadership team, alongside COO, CFO, and Chief Revenue Officer, reporting to the CEO
  • Running alongside a parallel Talent Acquisition hire
  • L&D hire planned for Q4
  • HRBP hire targeted once the company reaches 200 employees

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary: $130,000 to $150,000, with some flexibility above that range for the right candidate
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, two plan options: HSA high deductible or traditional
  • 401(k) through ADP with a small match

Location

  • Fully remote, no travel required
  • Leadership team based on the East Coast
