Changing Jobs In The Summer Months
The days are long and Central Park is full. It's that beautiful part of the year when a day in the office is just a prequel to a drink in the sun after work or a weekend filled with your favorite outdoor activities. You may well be thinking that hiring managers all across the city are in exactly the same position as you, and whilst that may be true to an extent, one thing that you can rely on is your recruiter still working as hard as ever to find the right opportunity to present to you. Any business worth joining will be as focused as ever on its growth and progression, so if you're finding yourself uninspired at work and staring out of the office window waiting to get out each day, but feeling like summer is the worst time of year to make a career move, then think again!
Amongst people's summer vacations and the holiday days, there is a tremendous amount of search activity in recruitment. And I'll let you in on a little secret here; the summer hiring myth means there are a lot fewer people to compete with. So while others are kicking back, take advantage! Reaching out to existing connections and indeed, making new ones should be high up your list of priorities during these months – it's a great time to put yourself out there and you never know what opportunities could arise at those summer parties. Away from the late nights of entertaining, your LinkedIn activity is more important than ever in 2016. You can bet your bottom dollar that Microsoft's $26bn acquisition of LinkedIn means big things for the professional networking platform and its 433 million users. There are over 6 million active job listings posted on LinkedIn and if you've spent a good amount of time making sure you've made your profile as attractive as possible, then any targeted application you make will be taken very seriously, regardless of the temperature outside. So make sure that your profile gets just as much attention as the ever important resume. An essential piece of advice I would give is to find a recruiter that fills you with confidence when you're discussing your career and any moves you make. As mentioned previously, they should still be doing as much networking as ever to make sure they have the market knowledge to advise you on exactly which options you have and which one to take. Ensure you have an open and honest relationship with each other and that they know every motivation that drives you to grow your career each day.
So whether you're dreaming of that week on the beach or sunning yourself with friends at the weekend, now is as good a time as ever to be able to go into the office each day and feel valued and rewarded. If a career move is what is required to achieve this then get yourself out there, make all the right connections and keep that job search moving as well as in any other season. For any advice on opportunities available to you right now, information on the marketplace or a general discussion about your career and the direction you aim to take it in, don't hesitate to reach out to us here at Hoxton Circle – putting people first, all year round.
