A rapidly growing property investment firm based in San Diego is seeking a Controller on a direct hire basis. The Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations for all three business sectors (hotel/real estate/ restaurants), ensuring financial accuracy and compliance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the preparation of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for hotel, real estate, and restaurant operations.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review monthly and quarterly financial reports, ensuring alignment with company goals and financial standards.
  • Process and reconcile general ledger entries, including revenue recognition, expenses, accruals, and amortization.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and address any discrepancies promptly.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring timely processing and payment of invoices.
  • Review and approve invoices related to hotel, real estate, and restaurant expenses.
  • Manage daily cash balances, ensuring effective cash flow management across all business units.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and ensure accurate recording of all cash transactions.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards (GAAP) and applicable tax regulations.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing requested documentation and support.
  • Manage property-specific accounting for real estate holdings, including rent, leasing, and property management.
  • Oversee restaurant-specific accounting, including tracking food and beverage costs, labor costs, and other variable expenses.
  • Oversee accounting software usage (e.g., Yardi, QuickBooks, Sage), ensuring effective functionality across divisions.
  • Ensure proper integration of accounting systems for streamlined financial reporting.
  • Manage tax filings, including sales tax, property tax, and income tax returns, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, ensuring adherence to policies and providing ongoing training and development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of accounting experience
  • Hotel, leisure, travel, real estate, and/or restaurant industry experience highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles.
  • Experience with specific accounting practices (e.g., property management, revenue recognition, cost of goods sold, and food & beverage accounting) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (will train) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with senior management, auditors, and vendors.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
