A nonprofit based in New York is seeking a Staff Accountant on a direct hire basis. The Staff Accountant will assist with GAAP accounting related functions and some grant accounting related tasks. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of accounting experience, a basic understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, and some exposure to grant management (will train).
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including bank accounts and credit card statements.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and reports.
- Ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions in the accounting system.
- Track and allocate grant expenditures to ensure compliance with grant requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of grant financial reports for funders.
- Reconcile grant-related accounts and provide updates on project budgets and expenditures.
- Assist in maintaining internal controls and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting regulations.
- Provide support during audits and assist with financial analysis as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Basic knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and grant management.
- Strong proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- CPA eligible (must be on track to sit for the CPA exam or have completed the required coursework).
